As a follow up to my March 24 post (found here), I wanted to point out that recently there has been more debate on the issue of whether or not abstinence-only sex education has served to reduce or actually caused a spike in teen sexuality statistics. More articles have appeared taking both sides of the debate. You can view them by clicking on the article title links noted below.
At HomeWord, we're unashamedly about abstinence until marriage (and then, of course, faithfulness in sexuality to one's spouse). We believe that helping kids build a life of purity and integrity now, will reap lasting rewards in their lives as adults.
Personally, I'm for a comprehensive and values-based approach to teaching kids sexuality. I just happen to think this best happens when parents take the initiative to accept the responsibility of becoming the primary provider of this education. What should and should not be taught in schools is a fair topic of discussion.
As I've noted in other posts, Jim Burns' soon-to-be-released books on the issues of purity and sexuality will be a benefit to both parents and students in this area. For more information on these books, click here.
