An annual study released by the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University found that the teen employment rate for the first quarter of 2008 was the lowest it's been in the 60 years that teen employment data has been recorded.
One in three teens ages 16 to 19 are likely to work this summer, according to the study.
Joseph McLaughlin, a researcher and co-author of the Northeastern University study, said job losses that occurred nationwide in the first four months of the year also will contribute to a summer that may produce record lows for youth employment.
"Teens really need a strong labor market to pull them in," he said. "They face a really tough time."
